Humour is a Gift

Humour is a GIFT...

and laughter is its UNWRAPPING…

When we left behind omniscience and the ability to foresee what is likely, we GAINED the ability to be surprised, and surprise is at the root of so much humour. When we bought into the social conventions and standards of behaviour we were taught, we GAINED the ability to transgress them and be naughty and improper, and these times are often OPPORTUNITIES for humour.

Have you every struggled to suppress a silly thought or laughter that came upon you at the wrong time?

Perhaps unable to get a funny thought or idea or image out of your head when it would be inappropriate to laugh?

Perhaps at a sombre occasion, like a funeral, or in a library where you’re supposed to be quiet?

Is there anything that feels better, more delicious, than laughter?

Is there anything that can relieve stress and tension and worry, and bring relief faster than laughter?

Laughter so intense tears are streaming down your face, you can barely catch your breath, and your abdomen is cramping.

Isn’t humour and laughter best when shared with someone who enjoys it like you do?
Is there anything more satisfying, any greater connection than sharing a good laugh with another (at least while keeping your clothes on)?
Is there any greater GIFT you can give to another, especially when they’re feeling down?
Is there any greater gift you can give to YOURSELF than finding the humour in a situation or your own behaviour?

Humans are enigmatic creatures…

…full of ideas how things should be and natural urges.

Passing wind in church is “improper;” but it can also be funny.
Squatting down and splitting the seam of your pants is unwanted, but it can also be funny.
Being silly and improper can often bring a laugh and a smile to a situation and lighten the mood.

Life is ABSURD
and the ability to LAUGH at it,
and at yourself, is one of the great OPPORTUNITIES
we have here in this physical space/time reality.

Everyone’s humour is different…

…but FINDING the humour in the situation is like finding treasure.

I’m talking about humour that is benevolent, silly and pokes fun.

I’m NOT talking about so called “humour” that’s cruel or disparaging or unkind.

That’s not humour.
That is something else that’s intended to hurt or diminish, not help, and uplift.

That said, somebody who doesn’t see the humour or…

…who CHOOSES to get offended…

…may just be REVEALING their own issues and hangups.

Everyone may not “get” your humour,
but that’s no reason not to offer it lovingly.

Laughter is life...

Take every opportunity to find humour and to share laughter. Laughter is sharing. Laughter is connection. Laughter is love.

There’s a saying I heard growing up,

“If you can’t laugh,
you might as well be dead.”

Laughter is life expressing itself through you in that moment.

Take every opportunity to LAUGH,

and to LIVE.
